Essential Supplements
What and Why

Essential supplements in this context do not mean nutritionals that our body can't manufacture and must be obtained in food or taken as supplements. These are "essential vitamins and minerals" but that is not what essential supplements refer to.

It means those specific types of supplements that are taken to empower the body to fend off various types of chronic illnesses that characterize modern living.

There are at least five specific functions that need to be addressed via a program of smart supplementation. These areas get to the heart of what each cell in the body needs to thrive and perform its function.

Cells need to be fed; they need to communicate; they need to be protected; they need to be regulated and they need to be energized. A sixth item could also be added to the list, namely, cleansing and detoxifying.

If any one of these areas is neglected, the person that inhabits that body will feel it in terms of things like chronic allergies, low energy levels, non-specific aches and pains, headaches and eventually, the more serious issues of diabetes, cardiovascular problems, cancers, digestive tract lesions, and degenerating bones and joints.

In short, every disease condition can be ultimately traced back to a nutritional condition that prevented the body from protecting itself.

Traditional doctors and most pharmacists will dispute that since in general they are not trained in nutrition or natural health and don't know much about it. They sure are trained in how to fill out a prescription though.

The menu of essential supplements and what they support in the body are itemized below. Dietary supplements are not drugs or medicine; they are not taken to heal or mitigate a specific disease.

What they to is equip the body to function as it was intended and when our bodily systems work correctly, it should be able to fend off any threats to its wellness.

  • Omega-3: Inflammatory diseases
  • Glutathione - The Master Antioxidant: Oxidative stress and detoxification
  • Bio-Active Sugars: Intercellular communication
  • Phytosterols: organ-to-organ communication, Hormone regulation
  • Amino acids: building blocks for proteins
  • Vitamins, Minerals, Phytonutrients: Disease conditions of nutritional deficiency
  • Each of these areas are covered in separate pages with special emphasis given to certain supplements that have been shown to help the body function as it was designed.

It is a sad state of affairs when the country's dietary norms have degenerated to the extent that we have to supplement our modern nutritionally challenged diet by eating fresh organic food.

Foods such as broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, fresh non-processed fruit and the "colorful" phyto-hormone rich vegetables can be thought of as "essential supplements" for a food system heavy in calories but extremely lacking in nutrition.

The ideal would be for the fresh, organic, non-processed vegetables and fruits to be the norm with an occasional fast food meal, say once a month, thrown in as a treat if you just can't resist the urge.

When reference is made to nutritionally challenged food, we are placing the blame directly on our fast food, processed food and factory farmed food industries. We can't always avoid them, especially in the less affluent areas, but perhaps we can compensate for them and give ourselves some degree of protection.

The starting point will be chronic inflammation with a discussion of how it develops and how to correct it. Navigate to the immune system to get started.
